Job Prospects in media companies

Hi,

Want to check on the job prospects in media companies within HK. I am moving to HK by August.

Would love to get views on how STARs...and other companies hire for marketing services.

Also if there are headhunters and contacts of consultants that i could get , it would be helpful. Hopefully language should not be a stumbling block while seeking media jobs. ( in Tv Channels etc.)

Cheers

After many unsucessful attempts I have ended up working in a completely different industry.
Star pay no attention to applications via their website. I have a friend who has been in conversation with them for over 6 months now and I come from a very strong tv background and couldn't get them to respond to any of my attempts to make contact. Good Luck.
Aquent is an agency that does quite a bit of work with these companies too but wasn't any use to me and take care - only one recruitment company can represent you to any one organisation.
Get yourselves a copy of Media magazine (the news stand beside the escalator on Staunton Stree thas it and I'm sure lots of others do too.
Start networking - oriented.com is a good start but also the Chambers of Commerce etc.
Networking seems to yield the best results. As an outsider to me it seems the media companies hire lots of expats but it is all about knowing someone to get your foot in the door because getting to or past HR is nigh on impossible.

Tkx for insight !!!,

Am currently trying to gather as many contacts as i can from my current employer for leads when i get to Hk. I wanted some views on the local language bias , if any, and also if the regular Michael Page etc...would help in seeking job.

Since i have two months time, is Posting a Cv on websites with a phone call advised?? Getting a lil paranoid about quitting job and exploring uncharted companies at HK?? Also if media domain is not met ; what are the other strong mncs that one can look at ??

esque will become famous soon enough
By media jobs, it sounds like you mean ad sales - is that right? I work for a small print media company and while some of the editorial staff are expats, nearly all of the sales staff are fluent in cantonese. There is one British guy though, selling on a business publication. So I guess where there's a will there's a way....

Later found out that one British guy was half chinese and spoke fluent Cantonese...

How did your search go Kary?

i think sending your CV should be helpful. not everyone has had a difficult experience getting work which is media-related. my experience was pretty straightforward. i sent my CV via website, got a call from HK when an opening came up, got an offer thereafter and the visa after the mandatory application period. language should not be a bias if you will be marketing for an english channel which holds office in HK. my work is classified under creatives though so i don't know if this is the same for everyone--ad sales, marketing...etc. still, it's a job in the media industry and if there's a need and you have the academic bg, the previous experience and the qualifications, it's not impossible.
