You are all adults, don't need to be told what to do and what not to do. discipline and self motived are important. In my work place, we are all self managed, I never have to tell my staff what to do and when to leave, at the same time I never have to be told by my boss what to do when to leave.

In many occassion I worked til 12, 1 am in the morning then went home for a quick shower a few hrs sleep then went back to work again at 5am, and my boss never knew and i had no intention to tell him. I cancelled my holidays for work - so i lost my cost of airfares and I never told my boss.

i work twice as many hrs than other staff, I would get away from work when I could, to have some nice breaks. I had 11 weeks off last year and my boss never had any probs coz he knows I work hard during the rest of the year. roughly I am having another 12-13 weeks off again this year.

If you need to work more than 8 hours a day then surely its your problem as you're not managing your time effectively.

When I used to work in Life assurance I actually finished all my work by lunchtime and had nothing more to do whatsoever so I just slacked off and made myself look busy till 5 p.m then went home.

Alot of my colleagues do overtime - but I guess they do it for the overtime pay.

If I have leftover work to do, the longest I would ever stay is 6:30-7pm then I'm outta the office.

For some the rush hour crush dictates the time to leave (unless ofcourse you are a civil servant in which case you leave dead on time). Me? the MTR gets way too busy for me so I'm on it by 6pm.
But I do start early.

i used to work in an office where i was the only foreigner...

i was also one of the only ones to show up ready to work at 9am... everyone else kind of meandered in between 9-10am WITH PREAKFAST IN TOW!
so, they arrived late and then spent the first 15 minutes eating breakfast!

i often ate my lunch at my desk and took less than the full hour. i also left more or less promptly at 6pm... occassionally 6:30or 7pm...

the other folks always complained to me about how late they had to work...

i always thought if they bothered to show up on time and eat their breakfast on their own time, they might actually get to leave on time...

it used to pi*s me off because i thought if the boss called late at night, he would always get the same people answering the phone, but i got my own back one day, when he called at 11am and my colleague still wasn't in the office... he asked to speak to her and i said, i'm sorry, she's not in the office yet, i hope she isn't sick, she hasn't called in yet either....she wandered in about 15 minutes later...

Yeah we get that a lot here. If your boss is out getting a coffee or at ParknShop you tell people a pack of lies to cover up.

not true, as some types of work require longer hours. In my last job, the workload was just too much (though not in HK), we don't even have time to eat lunch and dinner!

But I agree, at the end of the day, it's a CHOICE, and there's no reason to gripe. So I quit that job and moved to HK - now my work is a manageable 10-12 hours a day.

The Cay is on a distinguished road
In my previous job, the director was a local Chinese and so were most of my colleagues. They would start work on time at 8 am but would spend time checking personal emails, pretend to look busy on the phone but were actually gossiping with each other. The supervisor was a caucasian and even she knew what they were up to. So these colleagues would waste their morning away, looked busy but not much was done. Then it was time for lunch. After lunch, they tried to look busy again but were too sleepy to do much since it was right after a meal. They finally got cracking with their work around 3 pm and by the time it was 5 pm, I and the supervisor would get ready to leave since we've done our work for the day. I would get all these dirty looks while those colleagues were hard at work and trying to finish their work for the day. The Chinese director were impressed with them, seeing how they would slog on past their time to get off work.

Anyway, don't worry about your colleagues but make sure that your boss knows what you've been doing.

I work the number of hours I need to finish my work that's it.
As for the one pretending working it is not a Chinese thing....seen it everywhere in the world, whether you are european, asian or american...all the same..You always have people praising themself for saying late....well if they do not have anyhing else to praise themself for..it is a pity for them, I won't for sure admire them anyway so why bother.
