P.c.l.l.

Hello,

I'm moving to HK with my family in the coming months and am wondering if anyone has any comments on the P.C.L.L. programs offered at CityU and HKU?

My husband is thinking of applying, although he's already missed this years deadline. Is it difficult to get into the program? Is the work within the program challenging for a North American university graduate? He finished law school 2 years ago and took time off to try some work in another sector. He is interested in law again and now that we are moving to HK, this could be a good time to transition into law by qualifying to pratice in HK.

I'm coming to do an LLM at HKU from the U.S. I don't have any idea how hard it will be to get in to that PCLL thing, but I bet its not that hard, especially at CityU.

I'm also interested in the PCLL course:
1) I guess HKU may be more prestigious than CItyU, but just want to know is what ways/aspects is HKU better?
2) Do you know the fees for PCLL (full time 1 year)- in HKU and CItyU?

Also, "FOREIGN LAW"- how is LLM at HKU? (e.g. course contents, research competency) I'm also interested in studying a masters/PHD degree in law.

From the basics I know, from 2008 the PCLL in HK will have additional requirements. Anyways, if you have a an average of 2:1 you should get into the PCLL. I am going to graduate 2008 in London so I have to spend my summers now in CityU (HKU doesnt have summer courses for law) to get those additional courses I can not get in the UK.

Please check http://www.hku.hk/pcll/

Dear students,

Subject: Changes to Pre-requisites for Hong Kong 'PCLL'

There are important changes taking place, starting in the 2008-09
academic year, in respect of admission to Hong Kong's Postgraduate
Certificate in Laws (PCLL) programme.

In order to be prepared for, and eligible for admission to, PCLL
programmes in 2008-09 and subsequent years, all students will need to
have satisfactorily completed courses in the following core subjects:

Contract
Tort
Constitutional Law
Criminal Law
Land Law
Equity
Civil Procedure
Criminal Procedure
Evidence
Business Associations
Commercial Law

In addition to passing the above core courses, students who have not
passed the following subjects at a university course in Hong Kong will
need to have passed recognised examinations in them. These are known
as the top-up subjects. They are:

Hong Kong Constitutional Law
Hong Kong Legal System
Hong Kong Land Law

This information is subject to change as there is currently a programme
of reform being undertaken so if you intend to practice in Hong Kong,
you will need to stay on top of developments.

This information was provided to the School by the Chair of the
Standing Committee on Legal Education and Training, Office of the
Solicitor-General, Department of Justice, Legal Policy Division and
they have provided a general website:

www.doj.gov.hk

In addition, the Chair indicated that further information on PCLL
courses could be found on the websites of three Hong Kong universities
that offer, or plan to offer, that course. The websites are:

University of Hong Kong
http://www.hku.hk/pcll/

City University of Hong Kong

Chinese University of Hong Kong

About "late" applications

Quote:
As the different transcript deadline dates show that you are aware that you may get transcripts at different dates depending on the category of applicants, does it mean that for a university of London external law student like myself (with the full academic results not known until late August) that I will definitely not get a full time government-funded PCLL place even if I secure a first class or upper second class (2:1) honour?
Answer:

No, because we are aware of the different dates we may be receiving full academic results from the different categories of applicants, we will allocate and hold back certain government-funded places for the different categories to ensure fairness to all applicants to the PCLL programme.

.
Yes, HKU is more prestigious indeed. My colleage is studying it and i've heard that law firms in HK (and even the government!!) did care about prestige of the university (not even the course!) in the recruitment process.
