As long as the butcher can give me cuts of meat without skin on it, any type will do.

In_HK,

Why have you titled your post "Fresh Goat Meat" and then talked about Mutton? Mutton comes from sheep, not goats.

Thank you In_HK for the info.

PDLM - You are probably right about mutton coming from sheep. But I guess it depends where you come from. In many south asian and south east asian countries mutton refers to goat meat as it is more popular and readily available. That's why I specified in parentheses that I'm looking for goat meat and not sheep.

Insofar as there is a word for goat meat then it is "chevon". Mutton quite clearly means meat from sheep - using it to refer to meat from goats is just wrong.

Regional terms

PDLM - Try telling that to the folks from Asia, especially from the Indian subcontinent, and South East Asia, where Mutton in fact is a common term for all types - lamb, hogget, sheep, & goat meat of all ages. Chevon is not a common term - Goat meat is not as popular in the west as it is in the East and so I go by whichever term is more popular in a region and amongst the people who eat it the most. There is nothing right or wrong about it, it's just the way local terms have evolved in each country/region and I love my Mutton (Goat Meat).

In India, Mutton stands for both goat and sheep meat.
Its just that sheep meat is not readily available in India.

But its sheep that shud be called as mutton. For goat meat, am blank ! whats the name ??
