Post Hong Kong ID Card Code

Dear All

just thought I should put up this link for all of you who are not to sure on what the letters mean on your Hong Kong ID Card. There has been some confusion about the various letters that appear on the new and old cards and this link should explain it all:

I've noticed it has removed some codes from the old ID card, do you know of a site that has similar details but for the old card.

The symbols remain the same - they've only changed the locations not the interpretation.

That's true, I just recently got my Smart ID after I damaged my 'conventional' ID card, and there aren't the same group of letters that was previously mentioned.
When I brought this up with the immigration officer at the time, I was told that this was the "new system" they were adopting to differentiate cardholders.....

***- holder aged 18 or above, and is eligible for a HK Re-entry Permit

* - holder aged between 11 and 17, and is eligible for a HK Re-Entry permit

A- RIGht of abode
R- right to Land
U- unconditional stay
C- conditional stay
M- Male
F- Female
Z- born in HK
X- born in mainland CHina
W- born in Macao
O- born in OTHER countries/regions

Y- date of birth has been verified by the Immigration Dept by virtue of the holder's passport or birth certificate

B- the holder's registrated Date of birth, Place of birth, or Gender has been altered after the holder's first registration of such details with the HK Immigration Dept

H1/K2/S1 etc.- Immigration office at which the HKID card was issued

L- the holder has previously lost the HKID card
(e.g. L1- the person has lost the ID card ONCE
L2- the person has lost it TWICE
...................)
