Grundig DVD Recorder

Have owned this for around a month now and thought I would give you a heads up.

Good points:
160GB model is great value and 250GB is even better (probably the best),
can watch a recording even if it is currently recording,
timer recordings can be named e.g. Monk, 24, Invasion.
good on-screen menus,
30-second advance button,
can copy DVD to HD and vice-versa,
service centre is in Causeway Bay (and not somewhere like Yuen Long)

Bad points:
can't split a title into two (my BBK non-HD could do this),
hiding chapters is messy,
tv tuner is below par,
slow start up time from cold (but almost instant if you've just switched it off),
clock needs to be reset after unplugging but date does not,

I was looking at the 250GB one in Fortress yesterday- the price seems to be pretty good though, without having done much research, wonder why it, and some other big name DVD/HD recorders, can be substantially less than other models which seem, on face value, to do the same thing.
Good to see the 'review-ette' on here the day after I was looking at it.

Could be because Grundig as a brand name is not that well known for a/v products but are known for their TVs. Could also be because DVD-HD and Blu-Ray are coming along very soon.

Plays my Divx discs fine. The manual doesn't state that it can play avi or mpeg4 files.

i saw sonys Blueray player a while back ...im a bit dissapointed...
it was HUGE!!!!
And it was still not available here in HK just in jp.
But still the sheer size of it... made me think of the vhs players in the early 80's.
Anyways anyone into blue ray or HD-dvd should check this one out:

Chung Yuen, Times Square 7th floor for about hkd2400. That was about 6 months back and there's more choice now. I would not buy this model again and would consider Pioneer, Panasonic or Sony.
