Gay? What's it like to be a friend of Dorothy in HK?

It may be an odd question to some, but I'm seriously wondering about what it's like to be an American gay man living in HK.

How is it in the work place?
Is it difficult to meet other gay friends?
Is it difficult to date? (what if you're more interested in westerners than asians? , i.e. not a "rice-queen")

Thanks

Correction: what it's like for any "western" man (not necessarily American)

... what it's like to be a *Western* gay man living in Hong Kong (American, British, Australian, German, Dutch...you get the point).

Wink nothing to worry about

Ok, so this isn't The Castro. It's a smaller town than SF in this respect, but not an unreasonable place to live as an out gay man. There are a number of good websites for reference which I found through Google, just enter the obvious search criteria !

Get in touch via private message here if you want to know more.
Cheers

Graeme

I just moved here from Vancouver a month ago, and having never been before, I had the same questions as you.

It hasn't been hard to meet people at all. Go down to Club 97 for their Friday night gay happy hour and you'll bump into all sorts of people. Both the gay and expat communities here seem to welcome newcomers warmly, and the city is a bright and sparkly playground for going out etc. The bar scene itself is more of weekend thingie - people here work too much to go out on weekdays - besides it seems like most people spend all their off time at the gym.

Dating other westernerns may be more of a challenge. Most of the western guys are rice queens, and the cutest boys are all asian. So your tastes may well shift once you get here.

Drop me a line if you'd like to chat more.

Hmmm... well, I realized how spoiled I really was when I used to live in New York, Boston... and even Texas, after coming here to HK and realizing that the whole gay thing is pretty a city-wide "dont ask, dont tell" policy, unless of course you're with other gay guys.

In the work place, it's pretty much non-existent. And it's not too difficult to meet other gay friends... but it may be easier to chat up expats because locals do keep to themselves. And I've pretty much dated one local guy after another, and they're pretty much all the same. Gym bunnies, who shop alot, who are over toned and overtanned, and care only about Madonna and shopping... and did I mention shopping. Anyway... on another note...

Can we have a group here for young gay Expat guys to meet for a drink or coffee to talk about work, life, etc. Seriously, I think a support group is needed... especially for those of us who don't work in a gweilo firm... but who work in "Local" firms. Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

By the way, nothing wrong with "local" firms... but firm culture pretty much prohibits self-expression... especially of the sexual orientation kind. Anyways, lets discuss. (Hopefully over coffee or something...) CHeers.

you're right about the more local firms though... it's a given that hong kong is still pretty conservative when it comes to gay issues, but to be honest, there are no voices going out to change it so. yes, we had a march this year, but some serious gay groups or just a little meet up group should be set up as a support system...

as long as there's no shopping involved

as for the hk gay scene? it's pretty much as it is world over. never changes lol. i just got the "Q guide" from DS Magazine that lists a lot of local gay organisations, only most of it is full of bathhouses... lol

An expat gathering sounds like a great idea. Let us know when you schedule something.
