Articling in HK?

Hello,

I am brainstorming all possible options for my husband's prospects of professional employment in HK. He will enter HK as dependant with me in the coming months. We are going to begin now looking for employment for him but realise that he will likely have to search for work upon arrival and it could take months before he finds anything suitable.

My question is this: Can a Canadian law school graduate do his articling in Hong Kong? My husband finished his three years of law school in 2004 but decided not to article here in Canada and chose to work for an unrelated company instead. Could anyone point me in the right direction for further information regarding Canadian law graduates and articling in Hong Kong? I imagine it is a long-shot but thought I would investigate it anyway.

Any info would be most welcome!

Your first problem is the dependent visa. By and large (and subject to much debate and pending changes, etc) dependents cannot work--even as VOLUNTEERS (I won't get into the new changes and exceptions--but do a quick search on 'dependent visa' on this site and you'll understand).

If he can land an internship with a firm, he would probably have to get a work visa to do so. Not sure if he would need to return to Canada to apply for that or not (I don't think so).

I would recommend your first hunt be the HK Bar--http://www.hk-lawyer.com/2006-3/default.htm See if you can find a hard copy in your university library or somewhere as the back is filled with help wanted for law firms and head hunters who can help place him.
