USD Savings

I need to open an account to park some USD. I heard that the Bank of East Asia offers the best interest rates, but they say they charge a 0.25% commission on both deposits and withdrawals. Is this a standard practice?

HSBC only charge when the amounts are high. You should confirm this with BEA and if the same just make multiple small deposits.

This may be silly but Paypal has really good rates on money kept in their account. You could put it in there and get a debit card attached to the account so you could withdraw as needed.

I'm getting 4.5% offshore at Anglo Irish- the local banks are a waste of time. Any interest is shadowed by their charges and the service is sooo poor as to cost you time.

Have you looked into ING Direct? If you still have a U.S. bank account, you can link the ING account to the U.S. bank account. Even with wiring fee, you will probably net more interest than anything. ING currently pays 4.15%, no minimium, no fees.
