Please advice on insurance buying in hk

Hi, everyone,

I've just been in hk for six months, and currently a full-time student..but I felt hong kong is an exciting city.
I want to ask you all for advice on insurance buying.

I need to some travel from hk island, like stanley to kowloon, like sham shui po.. sometimes the I felt the minibus driver is crazy. So, my main concern is related with accident protection insurance.

Could you share with me some of your experience? Since I don't have any income, so my monthly budget will be very limited, about 300 below.

I asked an UK based insurance company, they gave me a seems quite good plan, I am here just asking your advice for comparison.

Thanks all,
Fisher

Look for a local policy which covers some of the basics.

Accidents will be covered by the local govt hospitals. Infact most private hospitals will refer you to a govt hospital if it is life threatening. If the accident is serious the first response will be from the govt / fire services ambulances who will take you to the nearest emergency room... where you don't need insurance (couple of hundred dollars).

What exactly are you trying to cover? Medical fees? Loss of (non-existent) income? Life/disability insurance?

As KIA said, emergency medical is essentially free anyway.

Remember that insurance companies exist because on average you pay in more than you get out, so you need to be clear that you are either somehow going to beat the odds, or that you are covering against something which is very unlikely to happen to you but which if it did would be catastrophic financially...

Thanks you all

Thanks for your advice.

Before saw your reply, I even don't know such kind of medical fees will be covered by goverment. My case is, I am a full-time student, and some of small injures will be covered by my university. But I am not sure whether it is good enough.

I know insurance company live on probabilities. They need to reach more people and sell their you-oriented product once and once again. I am just want to hear advice from you about which company is better, and the experience of you guys buying insurance.

Stay tuned,
Lu Fei(fisher)

All legal HK Residents (including students) are entitled to public health care that is more or less free at the point of delivery. There is a HK$100 per visit charge to avoid time-wasting.
