Move to NT
i live in NT, and the traffic isn't too bad at all. I only got a cheapy MTB a few weeks back, just to "test the waters" on road and soon on a few trails. Just did a ride up route twisk, awesome climb, even more awesome coming down.
some people hire vans to transport their bikes, or take off the wheels and get a cab. another option is to get a full-sized folder, eg dahon matrix/cadenza. you can cover these in a fabric bag once folded, and no-one can say they are a bike

, so technically you can take it on the train. the big problem with these bikes is the price is high and the specs are mediocre. another option is the dahon allegro (i think that is the name), but it's a pull apart bike, more than a folder, and it costs $15k

but you get a lot of bike for that price (ultegra or dura-ace groupset on a light steel frame).
as you already have your roadie here, probably best to try getting a cab/van.
will send you a PM when i get back into shape, MB we can go for a spin.
