When I originally arrived, I looked at a couple of places where tenants had added or removed entire walls, so depending on the landlord it is possible to do things yourself. However, if asked to do so, you're bound to reverse any changes you've made when you leave. Also, you have absolutely no guarantee that you're going to get your money's worth. Once the lease is up, or as soon as it hits the break period, the landlord could decide that they can now get far more rent for this nicely renovated apartment and hit you with a huge increase or notice to leave.
