the privillege of holding a HKSAR passport over a just having a HK Permanent resident card is that you will become egilible for a Chinese Home visit permit. this card allows the holder 10 years visa free visits to the mainland of china.

and you won't need to be afraid of the 36 month rule in the immd ordinance. someones' permanent resident status could change in just the "right to land" if you have been absent from HK for more than 36 months.
this means one will lose his permanent status.
