Hi,
Just thought that I would keep this thread current.
Recently my Acer laptop broke 2 months out of warranty! A windows file was apparently missing or corrupt. I managed to reformat the hard drive but windows would not reinstall.
I took it to Universal Computer Company on the 2nd floor of Wanchai computer centre. The guys seemed ok and said that they would charge $80 to look at the machine and $300 if they could reinstall windows.
After a few days I get a call to say that they think it is the cd rom drive so they will try another. A few days later no that is fine and they think it is a 'chip that is damaged on the motherboard'. Don't quite know what this means or whether they just don't know in English. Get a bit worried get it back and take it to Acer in Quarry Bay.
Acer are very good and it turns out it was the Ram that was damaged and needed replacing - total cost $500 for inspection and labour and $750 for Ram (expensive i know). But glad my laptop is now working for $1250 (+ the $80 i paid to the guys at UCC).
My advice stick to the dealer service centre if you can. At least if anything goes wrong it is sorted properly. At Wanchai there were stacks of computers all piled on top of each other, people eating around the machines and they accidentally nearly gave me back the wrong charger. Don't think that I will risk it again!
