Nuts&Bolts -- I'd bet $250 that the router was connected to the ADSL modem and so was the NOW device.
i.e. The router was not in-between the ADSL and the NOW device.

Well I really can't answer that, except to say that from what I saw, the neighbor appeared to have had exactly the same NEC ADSL modem from PCCW as I use, and that PCCW appeared to run a [tatty] cream colored telephone style [4 or 6 wire I think] cable between the Buffalo router & the NOW device.
I never took too much interest in the system 'cos :
1) I thought the additional "NOW" wiring was unsightly.
2) My modem's position in a far room would have meant even longer lengths of unsightly PCCW hook-up wiring, and that was something I wouldn't tolerate.
I guess that only PCCW or some other "NOW" user can answer as to whether their "NOW" connection can come out of a spare router port if they are using a router.
Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to quiz him now about his set-up.
