| Don't worry about salary you may get in HK. Even now civil servants in HK (assuming this apply to the job you are seeking) are very well paid. It is not uncommon (here) to have civil servants with higher salary compared to their private sector counterparts (which is IMHO unhealthy for the economy).
Unless the rules have changed recently you do not have to be ethnic Chinese and/or know Cantonese and/or Mandarin to be a civil servant (although the number of jobs might be limited).
I have a number of gweilo friends who are civil servants.
Some of them have a highly visible profile (newspaper/TV).
