One American's attempt to assimilate into the culture and enjoy life in Hong Kong.
Here you'll learn everything you never wanted to know about life in Hong Kong for this American expatriate. I have lived for various lengths of time in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix, St. Louis, Kokomo, Indiana (yeah, that's right - so what?) , Tampa / St. Petersburg, Florida and Williamsburg, Virginia.
I have now moved from my home town of Chicago to Hong Kong with my wife and will be taking a Mandarin immersion course soon so that I can better fit in here.
I am a lover of travel, adventure capitalist, food snob, avid reader, songwriter / musician, novice chef, wannabe philanthropist, cunning linguist and lover of all things satirical, surreal or just plain absurd.
Additionally, I dislike most vegetables.

In which....hangover....send ....help.....and cheeseburgers Posted 22-11-2007 at 11:03 AM by srvblooze
This may come as a surprise to some of you that know me (alright, all of you that know me) but until last night I hadn't had an alcoholic beverage of any kind for about two months. Not since somewhere around week two of the NFL season. And even before that it had been another month or so. To say I've cut back would be an understatement in much the same way as saying George Bush is a little slow. Oddly enough, I hadn't even realized it or thought about it much. Until, that is, I woke...

In which she is NOT thin Posted 17-10-2007 at 02:20 PM by srvblooze
Well, I've been studying really hard for days on end and my head feels absolutely crammed full of umm, well, not knowledge exactly. It's more like it's been invaded by a swarm of gnats in the form of random Mandarin words and phrases and it's really pretty irritating. The wife, who taught Mandarin to American students at Old Dominion University for a time, has assured me that I'm doing very well and fully expects that I'll be the "toppest" (another addition to my list of...

In which they're "totally f@!*ing oblivious!" Posted 19-09-2007 at 07:49 PM by srvblooze
I witnessed the complete and total meltdown of a British woman at the grocery store today. To be fair, I believe she was only acting on what most westerners here feel but she did freak out in a most spectacular fashion! Everyone talks about the "hustle and bustle" of a big city. I confess that I don't really know what "bustle" is but for the sake of argument I am willing to concede that Hong Kong has it. There's 7 million people here so there's gotta be at least...

In which Sunday football just ain't the (ssshh!) same Posted 17-09-2007 at 11:30 PM by srvblooze
The Chicago Bears played the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at 3:15 PM Chicago time. Sadly, that was 4:15 AM on Monday in Hong Kong. Still, I haven't missed a Bears game since 1983 and I'm not about to start now. Here's how it went....... 3 AM pre-game warmups: OK, so let's see.....I have a 6 pack of Stella, a bag of shrimp chips (no, really- they're good), and a full pack of smokes (having long since broken the indoor smoking embargo imposed by the girl).....now all I have to do is...

In which she wants me to take dance classes with her
Well, there's no question- she's gone mad. Last night as I'm just about to attempt to birdie the 8th hole at Pebble Beach she says to me "I think I want to take the Dance class that they're offering at the clubhouse downstairs and I really want you to do it with me". Stunned at what I'd just heard and in a bit of a state at this point I say "Umm....I don't.....what did you....were you...speaking Mandarin just then?". "I said I would really like...
