    Is this a scam?

I have been contacted by email and sms by someone with a gmail account and a UK mobile number. The person wants to buy my car and has made an offer just under my asking price without seeing it. She has asked for my paypal details because she can not perform a wire transfer. I am very suspicious and want to walk away. How can I verify that this is legit?

    Walk away.

Don't even entertain the idea of accepting payment by Paypal for such a potential large sum.

...ask her to send Western Union...if she wants your car, she will find a way to get the money to you...if not, it's a scam i reckon...

Because it doesn't seem kosher. I have never tried to withdraw a huge sum from paypal but I am sure the fees are not trivial. Then there is the possibility that the funds don't clear the way that banks do. Why would someone buy sight-unseen except for photos and without getting it checked over by an expert? Then there is the question of shipping. It's all quite troubling. I have insisted on a wire transfer so let's see wait for the reply.

send a sms to the uk number, ask them to come out and pay in cash or if you can accept paypal, call out the person, ask them to go an internet cafe and arrange the paypal transaction while you're with them, then check your paypal ac for the transfer

Chargebacks can be quite common on Paypal, and this is the root of some scams. Paypal usually comes down on the side of the buyer, whether they're scammers or not, so you can be left with no cash and no goods.
