About LinkBacksDoes anyone know where I can buy dishwasher salt? I can't find it in Park n Shop.
I've just bought a dishwasher and the machine instructions reccommend the use of dishwasher salt - do most people follow this advice in Hong Kong?

I have never even heard of dishwasher salt? Are you sure its not a badly translated instruction?

It is not actually the same salt we put bland congee. Dishwashing soap can be linquid or powder (salt) form. Just like with laundry.
As for the original question, you can probably find it at CitiSuper in CWB, but I am not certain.

Saltwater says never to wash your knives and forks with salty water. Surely they'd rust?
Ps I've got a huge pile of dishes in my sink at the moment. Can I bring them round one day and save myself a few hours slaving over a hot sink?

Dishwater salt is just table salt without the anticaking agent. So get the dollar a bag stuff from China, and you will be alright.
If you want to feel what the salt does, get a footbath with some hot water and a bit of soap and slosh around a bit, then add half a teaspoon of tablesalt or a few grains of rock salt and slosh a bit more.
You will never want to be saltless again.

You are not going mad. I bought a Miele dishwasher and after going to all the supermarkets, I took the instructions to Fortress to ask where I could buy this dishwasher salt. I was told that you do not need to add salt in Hong Kong.

I've never heard of adding salt to dishwashers, either here, Australia or the US. In what countries is it common practice?

Thanks for the advice, I also contacted the HK Water Authority and they informed me that HK water is very "soft" (so its not necessary to add salt). Its common practice to add salt in Europe where the ater is "hard" (ie high mineral content)
