What does Home insurance cover?

There are two types of Home insurance policies, Fire insurance and Home contents.

A Fire insurance policy will protect the physical structure of a home against fire. In many cases a policyholder can obtain an Extra Perils policy, which will provide protection for your home for a number of other risks that are separate from fire (for example; water or typhoon damage). This ensures that you can repair your home should anything untoward happen. Usually a Fire insurance policy is only purchased by the person who actually owns the home.

A Home Contents policy will provide insurance for all of your possessions. This type of policy will provide cover for theft, unforeseen and accidental damage to personal effects, and household improvements (such as betterments to doors, locks and windows). A home contents policy will also usually allow a policyholder the option of insuring specific items on a Worldwide All Risks basis. A worldwide all risks option gives you the security that your possessions are insured outside of your home anywhere in the world. This option is usually taken in regards to jewelry, portable electronics, and furs.

As home insurance can provide cover for both the contents and the physical structure of the home the way that the premiums are calculated may differ between insurance companies. In terms of Home Contents the premium may be calculated based on a percentage of the value of the items in the home. Fire insurance policies will usually be calculated using a percentage of the total rebuilding cost of the home.
